Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to install bonded and unbonded topping slabs to existing concrete on residential, commercial or civil construction sites.It includes grinding and scabbling preparation techniques.It applies to concreters working as members of a team with at least a moderate degree of autonomy. They would be expected to complete routine activities without close supervision.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in all states and territories except Tasmania. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan and prepare to install topping slab.
  • Review and clarify task to install topping slab.
  • Review task specifications and check to make sure they are in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.
  • Identify safety signage and barricade requirements.
  • Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.
  • Select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.
  • Calculate material quantity requirements.
  • Acquire materials for the task and locate them safely ready for use.
       
Element: Prepare concrete for topping slab.
  • Erect identified safety signage and barricades, and fit personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Determine need for concrete reinforcement through consultation with relevant personnel and install reinforcement in accordance with specifications.
  • Select and check preparation equipment for this process.
  • Scarify existing concrete using appropriate preparation techniques in accordance with specifications.
  • Clear surface loose particles and debris from surface to be topped.
  • Check existing control joints in substrate to ensure they are carried through and reflected in proposed topping.
       
Element: Pour topping slab.
  • Prepare existing concrete surface for topping slab with bonded topping or separation material in accordance with specifications.
  • Pour topping slab onto existing concrete surface and screed to specifications.
       
Element: Cure and seal topping slab.
  • Use setting, and apply curing agents and curing techniques to topping slab in accordance with specifications.
  • Maintain curing and sealing for period stated in specifications
       
Element: Clean up after installing topping slab.
  • Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.
  • Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
